Researching Photographic Techniques

When I create my images, I want them to look high quality and professional. To create this I will research photographic techniques to get the highest quality images that will be displayed on my magazine cover, contents page and feature article.

Firstly I began looking at the lighting to see if I could achieve the right amount of brightness to gleam on my model. To get the lighting right for my photo shoot I watched a video on Threepoint lighting for the portrait photography. Three point lighting is where two lights are placed on the left and right side of the model and its shone on her, there is a third light placed behind the model to make the photo brighter and for a defined outline.

I then tried using this technuque out, the light hits my models face really well, this photo was taken inside a studio which I will also do for my images for the magazines.

I watched a fashion photography video about the location and the props that could be used. The location was in a studio with different colour back drops used of black and browns which was to go with the theme of the images which was about a Mongolian travel story. The props used was fur coats, patterned rugs and husky dogs. When the background was black with the lighting shone on it, it gave off a glow around my model. For the magazine I'm shooting I would need a lighter coloured background such as white to give off the right effect. This video shows that it will still look effective shooting inside.

After that I looked at a video to expand my view about taking photos outside and how easy it is to use the natural light to take high quality images. Firstly he talks about using a wide open apature to capture more sun in the lense. I have also read online that by using a flash from the camera will get rid of blemishes and shadows to make the skin look flawless, if theres a chance I decide to take photos outside then these techniques will come in useful.

I researched another photographic technique which was poses and framing, the shot I would need poses and framing for is the main image on my front cover, which I will use a medium close up then use either another medium close up or medium long shots for the other images. I need to think of ways the model can pose that would make my magazine stand out from the others.

  1. Useful proficient/excellent research into studio techniques, well done. I particularly like the way you have experimented with the techniques you researched as this demonstrates you are clearly thinking about developing your skills before the main task. Target:
    1) Check you grammar e.g. 'i' should be 'I'
