institution

An institution can either be a corporation or company which sells products to make a profit. This product could be anything however as I am creating a magazine I will be only looking at magazine institutions.

The total number of consumer magazines in the UK is 2,471 with an estimated value of £1.4 billion. The total number of business to business magazines in the UK is 4,395 and has an estimated value of £3.2 billion. They expected by 2014 that it will reach £7 billion
Magazine publishing institution constantly are changing by using different platforms such as mobiles, tablets, media, online and live events and by doing this, the institutions satisfy the consumers needs in ways they hope to find the information they want. Magazine publishing institutions are also increasing as they are buying independent magazines. By doing this it expands money consumption for the institution as the independent magazine will be exposed to a larger audience and more copies will be bought by readers. The publishing institution are normally a variety of independent magazine owned by larger publishing firms which are then owned by some of the largest institutions in the UK. Meaning that the correct audiences can be reached at a larger scale, which allows diversification by creating different types of media platforms in the different branches of the conglomeration.

Bauer Media group is a multinational media company based in Germany which sells 38 million magazines worldwide in a week and have over 300 magazines in 15 different countries it. It offers radio station, television channels and online Bauer media publishes magazines like Grazia, Heat, and Empire. Due to how large this publisher is I'm very likely to go to Bauer to publish my magazine however they don't publish any magazine that would appeal to my target audience so by bringing my magazine to them it will bring them more success.

IPC Media are the UK's largest consumer magazine publishers, having an audience of 26 million UK adults. 42% are men and 58% are woman, IPC have 25 million users worldwide each month white are split into three publishing division. One of these are IPC Connect which is what my target audience fit into.

IPC CONNECT

IPC connect are aimed at woman which provides digital media and print in areas of celebrity, lifestyle, fashion, entertainment and televsion. It has a mass market of 9.4 million woman everything month and is estimated 49% of all mass market woman. IPC Connect publishes magazines such as teen now! and TV easy. they already have a magazine aimed at my target audience so i probably wouldn't go to them

BBC Magazine is the publishing division of the BBC Worldwide. Recently it has been part of Immediate Media Company which happens to be the third largest Uk magazine publisher. They also have over one million active subscribers and have 58 magazine and 36 websites. they sell 70 million maagazine every year. BBC magazines own magazines such as top gear and Top of the pops. Top of the pops is aimed at a targets audience the same age as mine so I wont be picking them to publish my magazine.

feature/double page spread construction

This is my feature page article under construction.
I firstly edited then added my Image to the feature article page. When I edited the image I changed the brightness to make it look brighter, I also done some basic editing such as airbrushing the face, adding more colour to the skin and whitening the teeth. I then placed it onto this page and put it across half the page so you can clearly see who the article is about.

To make these shapes I used the rectangle tool then used the transform tool so I could rotate the shapes and resize them to how I want. I placed a triangular one at the bottom right of the page so I could place the page number in it, and I used the rectangle tool also for the shape on the top right, its just that after I placed the tool there I then chose the Lasso tool to select a triangle to cut it out of that rectangle to give it that shape. I then set both of the shapes on the right sides opacity down so you could still see the image. For this page I used the same colour pink as I did on the cover and contents to make my pages fit together and to stick to the colour palette.

I then added text to my page by using the text tool to write the quote as the title which by using this gives a little teaser of what the story is about, I picked the colour of the text to be white as I thought it fitted nicely with the pink and it stand out against it. I then put writing on the right side of the page and I chose to use black writing because if I used white it would have contrasted with the background and would have been hard to read, I chose to put her name on the page to show that it is her so the audience dont get confused.

After I finished that I then used the text tool to type out my double page spread interview, using the grid tool to get the correct spacing between the texts. I changed the colour between the questions and answers, I picked pink for the answers as it goes with the rest of the magazine, and for the questions I picked the same purple that was on the cover and the contents so it all flows together. By doing this it makes it easier to tell who is speaking. I then created a pink box (the same pink as the rest of the page) by using the shape tool to place a rectangle, and then used the transform tool to change the angle of it and to move it around on the page, and then by using the text tool I placed an 'S' in it, by doing this it makes the text stand out and it also draws the reader in.

I then used the shape tool to create small rectangle boxes to highlight keywords so it stands out. I did this in purple as the writing is in pink, and it fits with the rest of my colour scheme throughout the magazine.

Lastly I added a small images at the bottom of the page and used the text tool to add text next to the image briefly describing something what the image was about, I chose this image as it fitted perfectly with the text. And by using black text next to it, it looks more professional.

feature article draft

So Eloise, are we correct in saying this year has definitely been a bit of a roller coaster for you?

Yes! Its had it’s ups and downs but there isn’t anything I would do to change it, I think it’s turned me into a stronger person.

You were targeted by Twitter trolls after a short romance with Adam Payne, how was that for you?

Well It really impacted my life, I wasn’t accepting job offers, I felt really self conscious whenever I left the house, so after a while I stopped leaving my home. I just didn’t feel safe anymore. But luckily one of my friends recommended seeing a councilor, and slowly but surely I was getting my confidence back piece by piece, and now I have more confidence than ever but I couldn't of done it without my fans!

Are the rumors true that we will be seeing you on the cinema screen again?

Yes! I’m currently filming for a movie that’s going to be huge I’m so excited for it to be released.

You’ve been hanging out with co-star Sam a lot since filming this movie, you’ve even
seen each other in your free time, is there anything going on there?

*Laughs* We were wondering when the rumours were going to start! He’s a good friend to me and I know he’s always there for me, we run through lines together and hanging out in our free time makes things less awkward on set. I’ve just split up from Adam, so there is no way i'm going to rush into another relationship!

content construction

These are screen shots from me making my contents page.

Firstly for my contents page I used the same colour scheme as I did on my front cover to follow the common conventions and give my magazine a professional look. I firstly used a rectangular tool to make a white box where there would be text and images and used that tool to create the purple box behind it and below it. I then used the transform tool to make the purple box behind it be slanted at an angle, making the contents look more interesting and not plain and boring. I then used the text tool to place the 'contents' at the top of this page which is sticking to common conventions so it is clear to the audience what this page is. I picked the colour as black because if I had used pink it would be too much colour on the page and it wouldn't be as great to look at.

I then added a white box using the rectangle tool and then added a black outline around it so it would stand out on the page, I will then go on to add text into this box and by using a box it will help separate the writing on the page to make it look more adventurous for the audience as not plain and boring.

After I finished that I then added an image of the star vehicle, which is different to the image on the front cover. By placing this image in the middle it will be one of the first images the readers will see. I increased the brightness of the image, and I done a few basic editing such as airbrushing. I put the page number below the image I done this by using the text tool so when the audience see it they can easily turn to that page. Next I added a quote so the potential audience can get an idea of what is happening on that page, it also creates suspense as the readers would want to find out more.

I then carefully planned where I would place my images and put the page numbers next to the images, and then I added text into the smaller text box using the text tool, I chose black because it stand out and there is already going to be a lot of colour on this page so I dont want to make it look to painful to look at. I decided to use a subheading because it will make the audience feel more mature, and I have also used the same font as the 'contents' which makes it fit together.

Next I added page numbers in the text box using the text tool in the same font and colour as the rest of the page numbers I placed everywhere else, making it look tidy and having it all flow together, The text is the same colour as the background making the page fit together, it also represents the audience as its not a mature colour such as black and its girly and playful.

Then I used the text tool to add the text in the text box using lexis that would attract the reader by using stories the would intrigue to the target audience. Some lexis that I used included using rhetorical questions so the reader feels engaged in the magazine and sounds like they're directly talking to you. I then added images to the banner going along the bottom, I brightened the images and then done some simple editing to them, I left enough room so I could then write something to go with the images.

After I had finished doing that I used the text tool to add other quotes or main stories under the images I done this so it gives a sneak preview of what will be on the page. I gave all the main writing on that page the same colour to make it look more professional and it also sticks to the colour scheme and doesn't look so sickly to look at. I chose to do the key featuring words in a different font such as 'exclusive' as this attracts the readers attention. I then added an Image and text to the left hand side giving information on the editor so the audience can see who has placed this magazine together, it will also make the reader feel as though the editor has personally wrote it to them and gives off a friendly vibe. I then put in a different font and colour beneath it and I used a font that looked like handwriting so  it looked as though she really wrote it. I then went to the banner down the bottom and added text using the text tool, I picked a white font to stand out from the purple background as that was the colour that seemed to stand out the most, and using text such as 'new pop band alert' it would intrigue reader as when your at that age you want to be the first to know everything, the font also fits with the little sub heading below the images which makes it flow together.

I then used the custom shape tool and chose to use an arrow to show the direction of what page the story is going to be on. Now this is my finished contents page.

cover construction

This is me showing how I made my cover page step by step.
Firstly I opened my image that I wanted to use for my cover in photoshop and I made the image brighter, After I done that I began to edit the photo by getting rid of any blemishes by using the brush tool on a low opacity, By doing this it gives the model a flawless look thats to die for.

secondly I had to chose what colours I wanted to use, and I decided on using pink and purple as it follow common conventions and they are the colours that would appeal most to my audience. I used the rectangle tool and ellipse tool to create boxes of different shapes and angle so I could place the text and images into it, by doing this it looks creative and not boring and it would also appeal to the audience. Then I added a barcode, this is a common convention of a magazine.

I then added my masthead onto the magazine fitting the common convention of having it 1/8th of the page, I put the the 'of the' into a circle so it would appeal to my audience as its not plain and boring. The font that I used for it is curvy and is normally used to represent the age and gender of my audience. Then I added text that would appeal to my target audience and stories that they would find interesting. Then I added the price, date and issue number on the magazine so the readers know the price, date and issue number.

Then I added text in the small box at the top and between each bit of the text I put a dot so it separates the text and makes it look unique. I put a circular box using the circle tool to make it different from other magazines and to make it different from using rectangles all the time. I used the type of pink for the circle that I have been using throughout the magazine to make it all flow together and fit well. There is a wide variety of font in the text tool with the font that holds most information in a bolder font which the audience would relate to more. And for the text in the circle I used a font which looks like someone has quickly scribbled it in and I used black font which makes it stand out on the page as its the only black font on the page. I used a white font in the purple banner on the lower half of the page and it stands out against the purple and it drags your eyes to it.

I then carried on adding all the Images that I wanted to use onto that page, I edited all the images before I put them onto the page, such as air brushing them and making them brighter. The images on the bottom banner of the page all fit together well as they are all took in the same place with the same colour background and they all have the same pose, which makes it look a bit like the mug shots. to get the picture of just the face, I opened the image up on photoshop and just selected the face using the quick selection tool, and when I had it selected I clicked on the move tool and moved it onto this cover page and placed it where I wanted it.

I then added the rest of the text to the page, I placed the names of the people on there right photo using the text tool and I decided to choose pink font as it fits well with the rest of the page, and black or white wouldn't stand out against the clothes. After I done that I added text to the images on the left hand side of the page, using the text tool. Next to the image of the head it has pink text and for the last word I used purple font so it stands out more and looks like its aimed at the reader more. For the text for the top image I used a simple font and I decided to use purple for the colour to fit well with the rest of the page and to make all the colours balance more. This is my finished front cover.

original images

These are the original images I have used either on the front cover, contents or the feature article.

This is the main imagine I used on the contents page as it is of a high quality, and has lighting shining on her face making the image brighter representing the target audience.

This is the original image of my model for my contents page

This is the original image from my contents page

this is my original image from my contents

this is my original image from my contents page

this is my original image from my contents page

this is my original image of my model from my contents page

I used this on my feature page because It fitted well with the story and it a natural photo something that the target audience would be able to link to

I used this on my front page as it fits with the story to go with it, and everything but the hands are blurred giving it a good effect.

I used this as a small image on my front cover as it fits well with the rest, and the image is of a high quality.

I wouldn't use this image as my model clearly isn't ready and the image is slightly blurred, if I used this image it would of lowered the quality of the magazine.

I used this on my double page spread as the image is of a high quality and fits to the target audience needs, it also slots in nicely with the story.

I used this as my main image on my front cover as its bright and fully represents my target audience, the image is of a high quality and its not blurry at all.

planning my photoshoot

Before I took my images for my photo shoot, I needed to plan out everything that I would need to create successful images that will help appeal to my target audience.

Magazine Cover Images
Equipment:
-Make up
-Lighting
-Costume
-Curlers
-Nail Varnish
-Studio backdrop
-600d Canon Camera
-35ml Lense
-Studio lense kit
-Tripod
-64gb card
-Battery for the camera

To make my model look attractive I will use makeup for my shoot, this links to the target audience as thy are at the age where they will start to wear make-up and be looking for ideas on how to apply it. The outfit my model wore was a sequined gold top and bright pink shorts (however you cant see them) I chose this as it fits with the target audience and as its bright it will connote freshness and youth which fits to my magazine. I have also researched the latest fashion trends and the clothes she is wearing is deemed as fashionable so the target audience can keep up with the trends. I will be taking the images in a studio as I want the image to blend into the background of the cover and also other pop magazine take images in the studio so I am following the common conventions. lighting will be used to brighten the models face this will make the face look flawless and brighten it.
Choice of Model

Name:Eloise
Age:17
Gender:female
Sexuality:Straight
Nationality: British
Ethnicity: White

I used Eloise as my model because she'll fit in with my target audiences age, and as she is attractive which will make the audience want to look like her, as most of the target audience is straight they will be able to relate to eloise as she is also straight. As you can see eloise is White British and that is what the majority of the audience are

masthead experiments

These are the names I came up with for my magazine;
-Poptastic!
-Top of the charts
-Party pop
-Just pop

From these four names I decided to have 'Top of the charts' as I thought it was the best name to use. I them needed to create a masthead but before creating it, I began to experiment with just one letter to see what I could create.

I Firstly picked a denim background and placed an 'A' in a regular font. The background wouldn't represent my audience because of the colour, I'm mostly just concentrating on the letter.

I then went to brusheezy and downloaded a smoke brush. I began to put it on my letter.

I then kept adding smoke on the image, changing the opacity of it and just trying things out,  I think this would suit my audience as its quite feminine.

When I had done that I then began to add text with a black outline around it so it would stand out against the layered letter. I chose words that started with 'A'

This is my final design however I wouldn't use this letter on my front cover, but I might use a text like this to represent my audience. This design isn't what you would see on a pop magazine cover as it would make it look far too busy. I could design something similar to this for my feature article.

These are the masthead experiments and I decided to use the top one as it looks more professional and stand out. Also the way that it is set out with the 'of the' in the dot in middle would represent my audience because its feminine and would suit that age range. I dont think the rest stand out as much and I think they're really boring in comparison to the top one.

Audience Research

'Any media text is created for a particular audience and will usually appeal most to this particular target audience' Hall and Holmes (1998)

This theory means that before the media text is created to a specific audience it will need to be researched to see what appeals to them, I am going to follow this theory so I can make a product that will interest my audience with the right media language used and I will do this by using primary and secondary research so I can represent the audience and make some sort of profit.

The magazine industries main target is to make a profit because its basically an industry revolved around money. To do this each magazine is a product that needs to be created and sold for the right target audience. Everything is done based around what the target audience want in the magazine so in the production process they are thought of and the media language is chosen best to suit them

The types of audiences:
There are two specific types of audiences when it comes to making a media production and these are mass audience and niche audience. Mass audience are large mainstream audiences who consume the mainstream culture and this audience is mostly made up from working class (demographic C1 - E) which is what Marxist suggest. Some of the productions they would consume are the follow; the hollywood films, reality television, soaps, film magazine such as empire, music magazines such as top of the pops and tabloids. The higher culture is linked with Jazz and Opera magazine, Opera music, ballet and BBC four.
The Niche audience is a smaller mass audience which is more indie and less popular globally. Marxist would state this audience as an upper/middle class audience. They can be a small dedicated group which advertises their product for. Some of these are the following; Fishing magazine, Farming programs, rock and hip hop magazines and certain films.

Profiling Audience:

When the magazine publishers profile their audience they look into the audience demographics and discover how they can fulfil the needs of the audience. When they start developing the magazine the publishers take into account the gender, age, nationality, social class, sexuality and ethnicity of the target audience they are selling the product to. They also want the audience appeal so they think about what the audience would be wanting in the magazine, if the magazine is for a niche or mass audience and how it will create profit.

I am now going to show my own primary audience research using Survey monkey and post it onto a social networking site such as facebook so I can find out my audience demographics and what type of genre the magazine will be.

Primary Audience Research:
To find out how to create a successful music magazine after I research existing ones, I created a survey on survey monkey with the right questions to help create a magazine for the needs of the audience.
The students who answered was mostly ages between 12-17, because I got this as my results my magazine will now appeal to people aged between 12-17.

there is a higher percentage of females who answered this questionnaire than males, my magazine will now be targeted at girls.

The results from the survey monkey show that the majority of the target audience have an average income of £25,000 - £49,000. The majority of people who would read this magazine fall into the audience demographic at band C1-E.

This shows that the ethnic group that answered this was all White british.

This shows that everyone who answered this questionnaire was straight.

This shows that more than half read a magazine now and then, then the rest is split into four equal parts. From my magazine hopefully i'll get them all to read a magazine often.

This instantly shows that I should create a pop magazine as its is what everyone has picked, it also fits in perfectly with the gender and age.

This shows that they arent to bothered about the lexis. however they would all want an appropriate colour scheme, professional images, good typography, catchy masthead and good celebrities.

This shows that people want the magazine to be called Top of the charts as everyone who has done the survey has pick that name for the magazine

Using stereotypes and representation theory (secondary research) to sell magazines.
Professional institutions profile their target audience by referring to representation theories, audience research and existing products. to figure out what stereotypes or media language they should use tp represent or attract their target audience. I am now going to look at key theories such as stereotypes, gender, youth, nationality, class, sexuality and ethnicity and see how they can be applied to music magazines simular to the genre I will create, this is going to teach me how I could use stereotypes to sell my product. The main thing that they do is use media language to portray existing stereotypes such as; gender, class, sexuality, regional or national, ethnicity and age to sell to a specific audience.

Gender
Laura Mulvey has a theory about woman that 'As erotic objects of desire for the characters within the story, and as erotic objects of desire for the spectator' (1975). However things have changed from 1975 as men can be seen the same way using this to be sold to the female audience. This is a perfect example, and its also pitched at teenage girls who would think this male is attractive because he's giving the typical 'puppy dog' eyes looking directly into the camera. Another reason they would think hes attractive is the mise-en-scene that has been used as the costume he is wearing as its what you would typically expect a young male his age to wear. He's only a little bit older than the target audiences age so they would find him attractive for that purpose too. And if I decided to use a male on my magazine cover I would use someone that age so it would appeal more to the target audience. They have given the singer an in trent style which would attract the audience, when creating an image like this I will make sure i'll use the right kind of costume and hairstyle that will make the audience find the person in my image attractive. This magazine cover follow the common convention by having a medium close up shot which is what I will use for a successful magazine cover, Th lighting use shines right on the models face but there is no shadowing as the image is bright, so this means that it was taken in a studio with a white backdrop it also means that there would of been a light on either side shining on the model. I will need to be using enough lighting in mine so no shadowing is on my main image, A colour palette is used of Orange, White, and black. These colours sell to the target audience because they are noticeable, and the target audience is aimed at females and these are quite girly colours. In terms of semiotics its suited for the audience when the lexis used such as 'I can Really shock my parents' instead of 'I can shock my parents' as this captures the audiences attention as its over dramatic, when I do my magazine I will make sure I over dramatises everything.

Youth

In Dick Hebdige theory (1988) he describes youth as rebellious but he also says 'youth is fun' as not all teenagers want to read about rebelliousness so more parent friendly magazines are made for the younger teenagers so they could sell more. This magazine cover is a perfect example as its bright and colourful, it also features a main image of a popular younger singer who is targeted at the right audience. The mise-en-scene used of her outfit, makeup, and hair relates to youth because its in style and its what you expect the target audience to dress like. The makeup is also not very dark and the hair colour is a natural colour making her look like your average teen. When creating my magazine cover I am going to use the right mise-en-scene that will attract my target audience. They have used a white backdrop and bright lighting to make her look angelic and fun.

Sexuality
Andy Medhurst (1998) stated that gay men are viewed as 'screaming queens' and lesbians are seen as 'butch dykes'. He also says these stereotypes are made to make heterosexual viewers feel safe in the belief that there way of living is the only natural one. Although this on this front cover there is a famous singer who says she is a lesbian for attention to make her more popular as she is the complete opposite to what is stereotyped as a lesbian which makes her appeal to men. By saying this for attention it can make her music popular and with the mise-en-scene of her bright pink hair which is not a natural or normal hair colour, it could fit into the stereotyped that lesbians would look like that as they are not seen as the norm as Medhurst has mentioned in his theory.

Class
Keith Gandal (2007) talks about in his theory that 'Lower class people are portrayed as a cultural other through fashions that deviate from the middle and upper classes'. This magazine shows that the mise-en-scene used in the main image is a well known singer from a boy band wearing a hoody. Because this magazine is classed at a demographic band of C1-E, the audience can feel like they can relate to him because they are dressed similarly however the star is from a band of A/B.

Nationality
Andrew Higson (1998) stated that 'Identity is generally understood to be shared identity of naturalised inhabitants of a particular political geographic space - this can be a particular nation or region.' This magazine cover presents that it uses the latest stories in british pop which the target audience would be interested in as it's to do with their nationality. The main image that has been used is of a popular british pop boy band so the audience will know who that are as they are most popular in their own nation.

Ethnicity
Sarita Malik (1998) stated that 'Many feel Black and Asian audiences are still not sufficiently catered for.' Pop music is the most popular so it can be a mixture of all races and this magazine cover proves that Malik's theory is wrong as the main image if of a pop boy band who are black. Other minor images used also are of a different ethnicity instead of just all white people used. This proves the magazine industry is moving with the times as there are different musicians of ethnicity groups.
