Analysing contents pages

This is vogues contents page. Its a fashion magazine which is aimed at white british woman aged from early 20s+. in terms of the layout it is quite simple however I think it looks effective. It has a masthead at the top saying Vogue challenging normal conventions by not having contents, however fits conventions by it being 1/8th of the page. there is also a big image used in the top left of the page, then the text surrounding the page

The image that has been used is a studio shot which has been taken in a studio with green screen. The stories also link to the image and there is also a smaller image on the bottom right of the page which is also a studio shot.

The colour palette is white, black and red. the red represents power and passion. The passion for the genre of the fashion and will be confident with what it is telling the audience. The dress on the model in the smaller image is white which fits in with the palette, which connotes innocence and purity.

In terms of typography, the text is all kept to the same font with the subheadings in a bolder text and in the colour red. And the biggest text on the page is the masthead which follows conventions by having it 1/8th of the page.

In terms of semiotics, I personally think the right choice of vocabulary was used for the audience. And it shows where the different sections are within the text

This contents page is from 24/7 magazine, with a target audience to both genders at ages 16+. for the layout its quite busy and in your face - like most common teenagers. The background is white which follows common conventions of normal contents pages and by also having a series of images scattered round each of the pages. The masthead is at the top, with subheadings dotted round the page also.

The images that had been used on this page are mostly studio shots, with one image of a crowd, then another of a image in the street. The images all have a text box underneath to show that the text belongs to the image. One of the images are black and white, this could be to link in with the theme of the page as the colours mainly on that are black and white, the images that have been done in the studio look like there being taken of a boy band something that both boys and girls would be interested in linking it with the target audience.

A colour palette, of white, black and blue are used for this contents page. These colours fit together and are all quite edgy and stand out against each other, also as they haven't bombarded the page with colour by just keeping it with just the main one colour - blue. They have only put the main stories in the contents which doesn't follow conventions, however this has left them more space to say what it is about so you can see more information on it, I think this links with the target audience as they would only want to see the main image.

the typography is all kept quite similar however, some of it is highlighted in either blue or black, which makes it stand out showing the points that they want you too see, and this is so you can see the key points without reading through the text linking again with the target audience stereotypically being lazy.
