History of magazines

heres a timeline of the most important events of the history of magazine

1586-  the first fashion magazine called 'Gynasceum sive Theatrum Mulierum' was published by Josse Arman and was in latin. 

1731-  'The Gentleman's Magazine' was the first general interest magazine including entertainment, stories and political commentary, which was published in England.

1770- the first womens magazine containing fashion and embroidery patterns was published called "the Ladys Magazine"


1848- the first WHSmiths railway stall which was originally called HWSmith when it was founded in 1972 but then changed because Henry's son was named William Henry.

1850- magazines starte being published in the US

1852- Germany started to produce wood pulp for the paper used in magazines instead of having the previous used rag based paper for magazines.

1853- IPC launched it's oldest magazine 'the feild'

1861- first colour magazines.

1870- It was compulsory to read and write in Victorian England.

1886- Cosmopolitan magazine was launched in the US

1892- Vogue was founded by Arthur turbine and harry mcvikar.

1899-  'National Geographic' magazine was first launched.

1931- First coloured photo published in the British 'The Times' magazine.

1933- Photo based magazines appear in the UK.

1936- the first time 'Mickey Mouse Weekly' gets produced in colour.

1944- 'Seventeen' is the first magazine published for adolescents.

1945- 'Elle' magazine launched for the first time in France.

1950- Radio times became the largest audited circulation of magazines in the world, selling 8 million+ copies per week

1953- the first 'TV Guide' begins and is distributed in 10 cities in the US.

1953- 'Playboy' is launched by Hugh Hefner starring Marilyn Monroe on the cover.

1958- The 'Daily Mirror' group buys Amalgamated Press which then led to creating IPC.

1962- The first UK paper to print colour advertising was the 'Bolton Evening News".

1967- "Rolling Stone" is produced in the US which was inspired by Jagger's band and have been on the front cover 19 times.

1970- "TV Times" becomes the most used weekly coloured magazine in the UK.

1984- Apple Macintosh is launched.

1985- Software such as Adobe "Illustrator" runs on Apple Macintosh and with this new technology leads to desktop publishing, which changed the production of magazines.

1986- PC's became accessible for people in the UK in their homes so PC magazines had a huge market.

1989- "Vogue" magazine has a barcode on the front cover

1992- First Text messege is sent via mobile

1994- The "Daily Telegraph" becomes the first national newspaper on the web.
2000- Microsoft tells everyone that over $1 billion sales will be made from e-books and e-magazines.

2001- 'Glamour' magazine is launched by Conde Nast and is an A5 sized magazine, claiming to fit in handbags better and had a £4 million marketing campaign. 

2009- Due to the recession, Conde Nast were forced to close "Portfolio" in the US and "Vanity Fair" in Germany. 

2011- Due to the phone hacking scandal, Rupert Murdoch shares that Sunday newspaper "News Of The World" would be closing after running for 200 years.
