Lighting Research

When trying to achieve a professional looking image you need to create the right lighting to make an amazing photo. There are many lighting techniques used to do this which I will follow when I create my own images for my magazine

Fill-in-light: Using this adds extra lighting with soft boxes and diffusers

Key light: key light is one of the most popular, as it's a powerful source of light which creates shadows with direct light by using a reflector with barn doors. You can also create this with soft light through an umberella

Setting up flash: set up a background light and a hair light which will allow you to see what light sources these can create. Second you set up the fill light and after that the key light is set up.

Veriety of effects can be made on a models face by having different types of lighting.  The first type is broad lighting which is frontal and three quarter lighting. Frontal lighting is when the lighting appears directly in the face that is facing the camera. Three quarter lighting is a light source that is put next to the camera showing that it shines on the side of the face creating a shadow which is minimal due to it being on the narrow side of the face

There is also short lighting which is three quarter, side, outdoor lighting. Three quarter lighting can illuminate the side of a subject . Lighting from the side can narrow the face. Side lighting with a short light can cause an illumination creating it too look  more dramatic and can even make the face look slimmer. Outdoor lighting creates a focus on direction, colour, quantity and quality of the light when capturing a photo of your model. Daylight can easily change meaning it can effect the outcome

Because I have decided to do a fashion magazine, I'll need to follow lighting techniques that they commonly use in magazine such as having back lighting which shows adds higher quality which then shows off the clothes more

Research into Shot types

whilst taking photos i needed to make sure I dont accidentaly cut short the model knee or neck. I will now look into the different shot types that i could possibly use whilst i take the images.

close up: A close up shot is used too show detail but not as dramatic as a close up

extreme close up: An extreme close up is used to show certain details on someones face they are ainly used in makeup adverts to show off the product theyre selling.

Bust shot: this is a shot of a model from the knees to above the head to focus on a certain part of a model too attract attention from a certain kind of audience that find the model attractive

medium shot: a medium shot is from the waist to  the head which is mostly commonly used in magaziness

Colour: Fashion photographers use colours to attract the audience. they use bold colours and they also use black and white to make the bolder colours look even more powerful which is something which i could include on my magazine.

I will have to chose poses for my models as having different types of poses will show off the clothing. it will have to be unique and look quite playful

Research into genre

Fashion magazines seem to represent a certain age as no one above 40 appears on the cover unless they're famous and known as a 'strong' woman, it mostly contains people in their 20s to have them similar to the target age to my audience a theorist called Audrey baisin quotted 'genre makes product making more efficient and more marketable'

When researching into my genre I first of all looked at vogue as it's known as a successful and powerful fashions magazine. I looked at the content, colour palette, and layout used to find out common conventions and make sure I included then in mine and create my own version. The layout is structured and is placed around the image as that is the main focus on the fashion. The contents of the magazine is made clear that contains fashion such as 'fabulous fall fashion' to attract readers

I also looked at elle magazine which also a fashion magazine and I discovered it contained the same common conventions that vogue followed with the structure and layout around the model with the contents including a fashion and a colour palette to make it look professional and link well.

I then looked at a regional magazine for cornwall. It includes a masthead and text splattered around th page with a lot of spacing, all includes one main image of a famous tourist location in cornwall. The main colour palette, it green black and white. It also says 'The green issue' showing what the magazine is mainly about.

In conclusion I have discovered the main common conventions of a fashion magazine are a fashion shot to fit in with this genre with a medium close up of the subject wearing the on trend colours, I will break conventions slightly by not having a studio shot and using a Cornish location to take these shots I will need a ciliate pallets and good structure to make the subheadings and masthead stand out

Synopsis and Treatment

As I am surrounded in cornish magazines I have began to realise that they all seem to be aimed at the same audience whcich is social grade A-C1 and have the same age range averaging at 30+. Most of the cornish magazines on the market are aimed at holiday makers rather than the people who live here. There is the odd story or picture that would interest a person of a younger age and local residents. So I am creating a magazine that will fill a gap in the market which will then have to be narrowed down due to it being a wide topic.

My madazine is going to bring together alot of genres rather than just sticking to the one, such as fasion, local music, whats happening in the area, music, regional, and local stories. This magazine wiill be aimed at woman aged 16-24 years in social grades A-C1. Its niche market because even though its fashion which is mainstream, but as it will only be on sale in cornwall it makes it a niche market. I will also have a secondary target audience of younger woman who are on holiday in cornwall.

In terms of style, my magazine will have breath taking views and show the stunning beaches that cornwall has to offer in my photoshoots. I will take fashion inspiration from popular fashion magazines such as vogue and cosmopolitan to show off the clothes.

In the terms of content, every Issue will include a wide range of stories and images that will link with things located to cornwall. They will fall under these headlines: Eating out, best retail shops, news, local music, event, fashion, and sports.

The cost of my magazine will be affordable as my target audience are teenagers so wont be able to afford the costly price of magazines such as vogue. I want my magazine to be affordable so I am thinking of pricing it as £2, this means that younger readers can afford the magazine even if they are earning minimum wage.

My magazine will be published through an independent publisher. The company that I will use is Out Of Hand LTD as it will reflect the interest of my magazine better than a massive conglomerate company

Theres a hude gap in the market for my magazine due to my research showing that fashion magazines are one of the most profitable genres and combining that with a local information will have more interest for potential readers.

Audience research

I firstly decided if I was aiming my magazine at a mass or niche audience. Due to my magazine being regional cornish fashion magazine, it would be aimed at a niche audience as it is not a mainstream trend due to their not being a magazine out there like it currently. I will also follow hall and holmes theory 1998 "any media text is created for a particular audience and will usually appeal most to this particular audience." As you want your media product to appeal to an audience so you need to know what they want out of it.

My target audience is a younger target audience who live in cornwall as there isn't any magazines for this type of audience and it will help show what there is to offer. I will hopefully keep a cornish theme running throughout the magazine and talk about current fashion news and what not to buy within the area.

I would also include other topics such as music festivals within the cornish area, as cornwall is my area and I want to attract an audience from cornwall. My age range will be from 16 to 20s as I think that at this age you are more interested in fashion and music. My audience Demographic will be A1-C due to the genre of my magazine.

Due to my audience being niche, they are more self confident and follow what they're intrested in instead of following a brand. For example, if my audience were mainstream they would buy the safe brands because they are well known and they kind of know what to expect through the magazine.

The only regional magazine in cornwall is cornwall today. They are all targeted at the same audience with the same audience demographic of AC-C1 and they all include the same contents of scenery shots to suit the audience. This shows by creating a magazine such as this it will bring something new to the market for a younger audience and will have more of an appeal due to this magazine representing them.

The next thing I did was create a questionnaire survey monkey for people of the same age as my target audience to answer so i could find out what they would want to see included in my magazine.

Research
To successfully create a regional fashion magazine I made a survey monkey questionnaire with questions that will be useful.

I firstly asked what there gender was, these results show that females were the only people to answer these questions. So therefore I should mainly target my audience as females. This might be because I asked my friends on social network to fill in this poll, and most of my friends are female.

These results show that the target audience were all straight therefore I will aim my magazine to this sexuality.

Due to most of the people who took this being ages between 16-24 my magazine will be targeted at people aged between that also.

From these results it shows that the majority of my target audience have a household income of £75,000 - £99,000. This shows the audience demographic is band A1-C so I should aim my target audience for this class.

These results show they are all white british.

Due to the people of whom I asked are mainly from cornwall I expected too see these results.

My results show that the audience would like to see stories about fashion, music and sport. This could be because of the audiences age and gender which is stereotypically.

As everyone chose the name verify I will use this as my name for my magazine.
