website stories

DON’T RISK YOUR LIFE FOR FASHION
Everyone craves a perfect all year round tan and some people even risk cancer from dangerous tanning booths or the humiliation of turning funny colours using fake tan, but I did something even more niave and stupid…

Unless you have never left your house or have an allergy to sunlight and keep completely covered up at all times everyone reading this article will have experience sunburn at some point in their lives…and you will know it is not a pleasant thing to experience.

Sunburn is an acute cutaneous inflammatory reaction that follows excessive exposure of the skin to ultraviolet radiation and living in the coastal county of Cornwall we perhaps get the to see more than out fair share of human lobsters hobbling from the beaches and less extreme cases of red noses or shoulders due to sunburn.

Funny though it may be to see these people who have over indulged in sunshine it is no joke. Sunburn can cause long-lasting damage to the skin. Children are especially at risk: one blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person's chances of developing skin cancer later in life. This is more of a reason why we should wear sun cream whenever we go out in the day during summertime, as it could save our ‘skin’ later on in life. Beaches are particular dangerous in the summertime with there high winds and chilled out ice creams and ciders its more than too easy too miss the high UVs the sun can project leaving with long term damage to the skin.

But I did not just ignore all of these sensible warnings, that I am now an expert on, I went to a whole new level of stupidity and decided to replace sun cream with cooking oil in the hopes of getting the ultimate tan. I think I had heard or read somewhere that this insane practice could give you the tan of your life and being young and niave I covered myself in cooking oil on one of the hottest days of the year before spending a hours in my back garden.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, to any sane person, by the time I attempted to stand and go back in doors I was crippled with pain and could barely move. I also started to suffer from all the extreme side effects of survear heat stroke. By the time my mum came home I was in such a critical condition she rushed me to hospital.
HOW LONG IN HOSPITAL? WHAT WAS SAID? HOW LONG OFF SCHOOL?

The hospital also warned me that I had significantly increased my chances of contracting skin cancer and told me to also stay visualent for the signs; spots or moles that change in size, shape, or color. Another important sign that I have to check for is a spot that looks different from all of the other spots on my skin.

Although my case was extreme, anyone who has had long exposure to the sun is at risk and you should always look out for the signs. If you notice any changes to moles or skin spots do not take the chance, book an appointment too see a go and see your GP as this could have a spiraling effect and land you in serious problems with your health if you ignore the warning signs.

Cornwall’s range of fashion isn't very wide like some cities which can make staying onto of the latest trends tricky unless you want to shop online – and where is the fun it that compared to spending a glorious day pacing the pavements and actually trying things on?
But if Cornwall was like the big Metro Cities then it would not be Cornwall would it? And part of the reason you choose to live there is the quaint local beauty.
If you go to a fishing village like Looe or Padstow you will mostly find that the men are wearing; sunglasses, flipflops and shorts even throughout the bitter cold months that we face, but lets face it girls the laid back beach style can look very HOT! And what do we really expect when there isn't a shopping mall in Cornwall or many designer shops? Lets also face it, one of the charms of Cornish men is that the latest fashion is usually the last thing on their minds and at least this means that people spend less time judging each other on whether or not they have the latest fashions…you have to love the laid back Cornish attitude!
However, women cannot always pull off the ‘laid back surf chick’ look as well as their male counter parts and this means we need to find somewhere to shop…especially for special occasions and I have found a few hidden gems for you to try that you might not have stumbled across in any of the bigger towns…
The first place I would check out for some more upmarket fashion is the coastal village of Rock that now plays host to an all year round Jack Wilce shop and a White Stuff!
If you need something a little more ‘dressy’ why not try the beautifully unique boutiques in the old market town of Wadebridge that have sprung up to meet the demands of second home owners and more affluent city tourists.
In short, thanks to the influx of the rich and famous North Cornwall is starting to become a hidden gem for fashion finds…ssshhhhhh! Don’t tell everyone because we would not want the Cornish charm to be spoilt by any major developers moving in! A noisy shopping center simply would not fit with thebeautiful peaceful landscapes that Cornwall has to offer.

Cornwall is blessed with beautiful sandy coasts and even
throughout the bleak chilly winter nights they still make a great spot to go for a long walk to find peace after a busy day. Or better still, perfect mini break getaway locations.
Cornwall is full of many beaches from Carbbis bay in St Ives to Summer Laze beach in Bude there are hundreds of beaches and coves to explore each with unique charm and beauty.
In 2012, for example, Bude was voted the 7th best beach destination in the UK by millions on trip advisor so if you want family friendly spaces with lots of local amenities Bude could be the perfect place to visit. However, if you are looking for a bit of upper class glamour the places to go are; Rock, Polzeath and Padstow that are the favorite haunts of the rich and famous… you may even be lucky enough to brush shoulders with some celebrities, like Kate Moss, who choose these locations as a getaway to unwind in when escaping their hectic non-stop lives. And who can blame them given the 5* standard Hotel and self-catering accommodation available in North Cornwall that when coupled with the stunning coast land makes for a 5* mini break. Rock, Padstow and Polzeath also boosts various cafes and restaurants, like the legendary Rick Steins, which allow you to eat delicious mouth watering food whilst watching the waves hit the sandy beach which is perfect for the cold stormy nights in the winter.
If you are looking for yet more luxury, why not try a spa break in Newquay or St. Ives?
Whatever you are looking for this winter, Cornwall’s coast has the perfect locations to escape and unwind.

Audience Research for website

To help me create a successful website for my regional magazine, I needed to research into what the audience would like to see on this website. So I decided to create another survey monkey to help my ideas.

These results show that the audience are quite female orientated. Meaning the website will be aimed at a female audience.

This shows a variation of 16 - over 20s but will mainly have to aim my website at a little bit lower age bit will still have to suit people over the age of 20.

These results are slightly different to my other ones this might be from different people being interested. However they are all just under £100,000 so I will still keep the demographic audience the same which is A1-C.

These results show that most people who are going to be looking will be white british.

This shows that most people will be straight white british females.

This shows a mixture of true life and fashion which hopefully I will combine and can make stories from both.

This shows that most people want images and not videos on there website.

Website Analysis

Cornwall Today

Cornwall today is a regional magazine for cornwall with an older target audience of both genders with a social demographic of A-C1. Cornwall todays target audience is the complete opposite to mine minus the A-C1 demographic. However I want to analyse the website to gain knowledge of other regional magazines within the area.

The homepage shows there is a huge range of images that when you click on it takes you to other pages on there websites, these are called internal links which are common in all websites. The images that are used on the website uses an image of the magazines cover and an image to tell the audience you can read the magazine through different devices, showing that its up to date. I could maybe use this for my magazine in order to make the target audience seem more interested.

In terms of layout the masthead is at the top following conventions in the top left corner, and the masthead is in the same style as it would be on the magazine making it all flow together, something that I will do when I create my own. Going across the page underneath the masthead are subheading which you can select that will take you to different pages on the website, this is another thing that most websites have so will have to put it in mine to follow conventions and to make it look profesional it also makes it easy to navigate through from page to page and is easy to look at. Then carrying on to underneath the subtitles there is images and articles for the audience to read, which is another convention I will need to follow when making my own website.

Cornwall todays colour palette is mainly white, black, grey and blue however they haven't really followed this through with the images but I think they've work round it. Blue connotes calm and is a relaxing colour showing that cornwall is a calm and relaxing place.

The typography through this website has been clear and looks professional so the readers can easily view it as that fits the target audience as they don't want something that you would see from a pop magazine which is bright and bold and over the top. Through looking at this I need to make sure my font is easy to read and feminine and modern in order to represent my target audience.

The semiotics used for cornwall today represent the target audience. as Articles appeal to there target audience as they are a matte group who are stereotypically interested in seeing articles written by them or others. and by having articles it different from saying stories as it doesn't look made up

Teen vogue is a magazine with a genre of fashion, its target audience is aimed at females ages 14-19 in the audience demographic A-C1 due to it being a high end fashion magazine for a younger audience.
On the homepage is has an advert running across near the top so it captures your eye. The smaller images are then placed below, Theres also an image of the latest issue and an image of the freebie if you subscribe.
In terms of layout it is well structured with the name of the magazine at the top of the page, and then small images of the social network that you can follow/like them on.
The colour palette in which is used is of black, white, pink and red. Red connotes fear and is a great way to get attention from the audience, and Pink suits the audience as its feminine and stereotypically teenage girls favourite colour.
For typography, The biggest text on the homepage is the title of the magazine, following conventions. using a variation of two fonts one being bold to capture the readers eye and the other more sophisticated.

I clicked on a subheading and the layout was similar to the homepage. Having the title at the top of the magazine with the original subheadings and social media images, also having an advert underneath to promote a product. The colour palette also follows the homepage to make the two fit together and keep it looking professional, also using the same text style with a smaller subtitle.

Research into editing

This year I want to improve my editing skills, so I researched photoshop tutorials to make my work look professional.

I looked upon youtube tutorial videos to improve my photoshop skills and help edit my photos. I first of all researched this video so I could get tips on how to create my own.

I looked at how to make my models flawless in photoshop by airbrushing their face to make them look immaculate. As I am doing a fashion magazine its important that my models look flawless as that is a common convention in a fashion magazine as the models always look flawless.

I then researched on youtube how to place an image in the text. You have to have your text in illustrator, and the text behind it, which you send to the back. next you have to go to Type>Create outlines. Then Object> compound path> make. After you make sure everything is selected, then go to object> clipping mask> make and then it should be complete.

This will come in handy when I make my mast head

Masthead and Title ideas

I came up with some font for my regional fashion magazine. After I sent out my survey I decided to chose VERIFY as the name of my magazine.

These are the different fonts I chose from for my magazine cover.

This was the first one I looked at, I like it because you can clearly see what it says and its bold so it would stick out on the page. I think it looks quite mature and professional so therefore its a strong contender to use as the title

This is another I looked at. I like this, however I think it looks a bit med-evil and wouldn't stand out to my target audience and doesn't look like something they would be interested in. However I like the way the letters curve

This font would suit the target audience nicely however I am slightly worried that with it being on a cover or contents you won't be able to see the letters clearly.

I do not think this typography would be suitable for my target audience at all. As it looks like it would be from something from a children's magazine so this is a perfect example of something I won't be using in my magazine.

Genre/Instituation Research

Genre/Institution research

Whilst creating my website, I will be using a server called data flame. I found other website servers and this was the first one in which I found with fast hosts which look cheap to start with, but you have to eventually pay more as it start at £4.99 and goes up to £19.99 I also looked at a server called heart internet, and that comes to a cost of £10.83 per month. I chose data flame as this web provider is the cheapest one on the internet.

Photoshoot Planning

Location:
for my contents page images, I went to rock beach as the location is very elegant in which i picked a sunny day to go so it represents cornwall better. I used a model sat down on a log in the sand wearing stylish clothes that any ages could wear.

Cast
For my cast of models I have used I will use mainly females. and have a female on the cover and of a simular age of who im aiming the magazine at, my model will then show off cornwalls landscapes and attract the audience making them want to read the magazine to know where the images was taken.

shot types
for my cover I will use a commonly use shot of a medium close up so you can see the models face, for most of my other images i will use a long shot so you can see what the model is wearing and the location I will need lots of different landscapes and outfits that will attract my audience and for my contents, website and billboard. If i can get these shots to show off what the model is wearing it will appeal to the audience.

crew
I will have to have one or two other people with me whilst I take these shots to help me carry the equipment and to do the models hair and makeup to make her look like how i wish for her to look so it would appeal to the target audience.
