Music Magazine genres and Target audience

The publication applicable in the genre of music magazine is huge and diverse as music tastes themselves. The main Genre of music and therefore music magazines are produced by institutions for profit are:

African
Avant-Garde

Caribbean
Brazilian

Comedy
Country
Asian
Easy Listening
Electronic
Modern Folk
Hip Hop
Jazz
Pop
R&B
Rock
Hip hop
Opra
electronic
Ska
Other
Indie
Grunge

I am now going to look more closely at 6 genres so I can work out which genre I would like
my new magazine to look like, I will also look at what type of music the genre involves, key
Artist that make music from that type of genre, leading magazines that cover the genre and
Summarise who the primary target audience are for the magazine.

R&B
R&B is often abbreviated for Rhythm and Blues. The name was originally used by record companies to describe recordings marketed predominantly to urban African Americans, at the time when 'rocking, urbane and jazz based music with a heavy, insistent beat' was getting more popular. RnB is a genre of popular African-American music that was originated in the 1940's

A list of popular RnB include:
Beyonce
Neyo
Mariah Carey
Mary J.Blige
R. Kelly

The main primary audience for R&B music are female teenagers. These are people who are in school/college/university and will be discussing and sharing links on twitter, facebook etc so they will always know what new and what seemed to be 'cool'. Most of these songs are aimed at females due to the stereo type of females feeling heartbroken and always seeking for love, and rnb is known for expressing love so females can relate to the songs. They will also be known for buying magazine aswell, RnB magazines are; Vibe, Floss, and bass.
This song won a grammy award for the best r&b song of 2008; neyo - miss independant

Rock

Rock music is a genre of music that begun as rock and roll in the united states in the 1950s and has devoloped into a variety of styls in the 1960s particularly in the united states and united kingdom. rock music is influenced by rhythm and blues and country music.

Here is a list of rock bands:
nirvana
The Who
Led Zeppelin
Green day
Iron Maiden
Red hot chilli peppers
Kiss
And many more

I would say that the target audience for people who listen to rock music is for any gender and the age range is anything between 15 till about 50 as it was a big thing in the early 90s - late 80s. People who think of rock would associate people who listen to it as Goth's who wear all black, do funky things with there hair and 'don't have a heart' type people.

there are many types of rock music, some include: Rock n Roll, heavy metal, hard rock, punk rock, and glam rock.

Analysis of College Magazine

Analysing college magazine

I am going to analyse the Bodmin college magazine so I can get a better understanding of the genre.

The main target for the audience is based between 11-18, as that is the age of students at the college. Also its secondary target audience is for older people such as teachers, parents or gaudiens. The majority of people reading this magazine will fall into the audience of demographic of band C1 - D

The masthead doesn’t suit its purpose as it doesn’t stand out, as the colours aren’t clear against the background, it’s also to small for the magazine which means that it doesn’t jump out at the potential reader. Whereas in conventional magazines the masthead takes up 2/4 of the front cover making it jump out more to the reader, which is the purpose of the masthead anyway. The text that is used in the masthead is out-dated which doesn’t fit in with the target audience for this magazine. The overall masthead isn’t what you would expect in a conventional magazine

Layout – the layout doesn’t fit the average layout which magazines would normally see on the cover of magazines because it has three images which are all badly taken shots making the cover look to busy. The layout should have one main image with text over layer and maybe a couple of smaller images, this layout looks far more professional and doesn’t look too in you face for the reader too look at. The cover should also have little teasers that get the audience’s attention with a quick glance at the magazine, whereas this magazine has three main jumbled images that make the magazine look unprofessional and unworthy of reading. Students would like to read something that looks good and professional with something eye catching on the cover that gets their attention about something they care about.

The cover overall had too many colours used together that make it horrible for the audience to look at, it also takes away an professional look it could of achieved. A conventional magazine cover would have a colour scheme to it that makes it look professional whilst remaining appealing to the reader. However this magazine cover uses colours that don’t go well together and the text does not show up as the colour and images clash with the text. This makes the whole front cover unclear for the reader as everything blending together and nothing standing out. These busy colours aren’t in the common conventions of magazines which usually only use to 3-5 colours at the most. This doesn’t cater for the target audience as these different colours create an old fashioned yet young feel that all age ranges aren’t going to be appealed by.

Images – The images that have been used for this magazine go against the usual conventions of a magazine as there are three images roughly placed together on the front whereas a usual magazine would have just one main image with maybe a few smaller ones. The long shots of these go against the usual type of main image being either a medium shot or close-up, as well as this the quality of the images are low with them being blurry and making the people who are in these images look are fuzzy and they are all in different colours. The content of the images mainly involve girls being shown in them which this supports Laura mulvey’s theory of the male gaze and shows that this might be showing them as an erotic desire for the reader. Also the content of the images are all about dancers showing that it doesn’t appeal to all the audience as this gives the magazine quite a girly feel which wouldn’t show interest in the male side of the audience.

Typography – a big thing that takes away the professional aspect to this is that lots of types of text are used whereas this wouldn’t have been done in a usual magazine. Also it doesn’t have any teasers, which mean the reader wouldn’t get any information about what is going to be included in the magazine. It also doesn’t have an issue number, which means the reader doesn’t know if there were any magazines before the one issued. They don’t have any extra information on the magazine, which they probably would like to know.

Conclusion – I think overall this magazine is not fit for purpose as none of the parts fit the common conventions of a magazine. It also goes against these conventions it doesn’t appeal to a reader as its not interesting and doesn’t capture their attention. The features in front look busy and not professional. I definitely know that the target audience wouldn’t find it appealing enough to read as it doesn’t compare to the type of things that teenagers would read (vogue, heat, etc.) It also lacks a big main story that jumps out at you at quick glance, also most of the students wouldn’t be interested in dancing so they would assume that the content in the magazine would be matching to the cover.
I am now going to analyse a magazine cover that was created by teenagers at the college.

Target audience – the primary target audience range for the ‘skive’ magazine is 11-19 as this magazine is created by student and made for students. The majority of people who will read this magazine will fall into the audience demographic at band C1 down to E

Masthead – the masthead fits its purpose and stands out on the page, you can clearly tell what the title of the magazine is and it doesn’t merge into the background, it also fits into the common conventions of magazines as it fits 1/8 of the front cover of the magazine. The mast head fits in with the target audience (11-19) as its not plain and boring, it jumps out at you.

Layout – the layout fits into the common convention of magazines and it has a main image in the middle and little but clear images scattered around, also as the images are good quality it makes the magazine look more professional and not to in your face for the reader to look at. It has teasers around the edges which give the reader an idea of what type of articles are inside the school magazine, and as the teasers are eye catching and interesting it would make you want to know the story behind it. The target audience would like to look at something which is eye catching as that is the type of thing that they would actually read (vogue, sports magazines etc.). However the magazine has got ‘Rebecca Stephens’ they could have used less space between the words as in professional magazines there wouldn’t be that amount of space between the two words. Also near the bottom of the page below the word ‘monogamy’ it has a short sentence where they have miss spelled the word ‘sixth form’ and instead wrote ‘sixth for’

Colour – the colour pallet on this cover will attract the young primary target audience because it fits with stereotypes proposed by theorist like S. Hall (1904). In other words, the dark blacks and greys connotes the magazine will represent the needs of the young target audience who are young, rebellious and prone to dark moods.

Images – the images used go with the usual conventions of a typical magazine cover as there is a main image that is a close up that takes up most of the page, and small medium long shot photos used. All the phots are high quality with makes the magazine look proffesion and link well with the colours used on the magazine. The images used will appeal to both genders of the target audience as there is a picture of a woman wearing clothes that are in style with the heading ‘tartan style is back’ which gets the readers attention. There’s also a photo of a boat which will stereotypically appeal to the male gender of the audience as they could be interesting in boating or whatever the story line is. The little photos are used so it will appeal to people who don’t take as much as an interest  as much as the other images. The main image is about stress so the magazine in targeted at most of its readers as it is aimed at people at school. The main image has been photoshopped which doesn’t normally happen on a magazine as there face is has been editing with an cracking effect, however I deffinitly think it would still appeal to the target audience.

Typography – the typography has used teasers and quotes so this connotes what the story is going to be about. The text used doesn’t connote to a specific gender as it isn’t girly or anything, it uses a simple text which would suit both genders, the typography keeps the crack effect theme to represent stress to link with the picture making it fit together and look more professional. However when they have wrote ‘Rebecca Stephens’ I think they have spaced they two words out to much which makes it look unprofessional a messy.

Conclusion – In conclusion, I believe the magazine overall fits the needs to the target audience as it includes a wide range of information and images that would appeal to both genders. It keeps to the theme of the crack and stress and links to the main image which is effective and the colour theme used would appeal to the primary target audience. The only thing that I would improve with it would be the spelling error and the spacing between some words but apart from that it is successful magazine cover.

Comparison – Comparing the Bodmin College and the skive magazine cover, the most successful one is the skive magazine, as the layout makes it easy to look at and includes lots of images all shapes and sizes to benefit the target audience however the bodmin college one doesn’t use any information  about the stories inside the magazine, it also uses poor quality photos that wouldn’t appeal to the majority of the audiences. They both include titles and are placed at the top where they should be but bodmin collge is hard to read as the background is to busy and blends with the background.

Evaluation

Before I started making and analysing any magazine, I firstly I started looking at the common conventions of every magazines so it would give me a better idea of how to make it look professional and more like a real magazine. I started by looking at my college magazine which doesn't fit to its target audience because it doesn't look very professional and the magazines front cover was just to busy. After looking at the magazine I wanted to go against everything that this magazine was, so I done a survey monkey to see what actual students (who are the target audience) wanted there magazines to look like and what they wanted it to be named. On my front cover I used one main image and some little images which sticks to the common conventions of a magazine, my target audience said that they wanted a catchy mast head on the cover of the magazine, which I also used and stuck to the convention of having it 1/8th of the page. On the front of my schools college magazine there is too many pictures and the writing blends into the background with it, so on my magazine cover it tried to stay well away from doing that by using high quality photos and sticking to the common conventional layout of having the little images with writing around it linking the images with some story that's in the magazine.

My products are aimed at people aged from 11-19 because these are the ages from when you start secondary school and leave sixth form or college and I want them to be interested in it because its there schools magazine and its about things that happen at there school, on the survey monkey I found that the it was all 14-16 year olds that read this magazine but that could be for a number of reasons such as I have more friends on facebook who are aged between that, etc. However as my results said that was the age range that reads it the most I would have to make my magazine appeal more to that age range more than someone aged between 11-13 as there is a higher chance of 14-16 year olds reading it. Because the students I'm creating the magazine for are mostly in higher education this goes against Adolescence in 2 volumes that Stanley hall wrote in 1904 where he came up with the 'storm and stress model' that states 'adolescence is inherently a time of storm and stress when all young people go through some degree of emotional and behavioural upheaval before establishing a more stable equilibrium at adulthood' he also said that 'criminal activity would increase at the ages of 12 & 24' my magazine is goes against this theory as it shows students being positive and happy and that they are staying in school and not causing madness and mayhem, I used mainly bright colours to shows that this school is a bright and vibrant place.

My target audience is mainly the students that attend the school and sixth form as on the front cover and contents page it has things that will involve them, so the stories will need to appeal to what interests them so they will pick the magazine up and read it. But as the main age range that will be reading my magazine are aged between 14-16 I had to put stories in there that would interest them (such as prom and GCSE) the secondary audience for my magazine will be the students parents or guardians because they will obviously be interested in what's going on in there child's school life. Having said this the content needs to appeal to the students but also give there parents information on what's going on. I made sure I attracted my target audience through a colour scheme that the colours didn't contrast and didn't look messy, I made sure my cover page had a simple layout and wasn't to aggressive to read, I included stories on the cover page that would suit my target audience such as 'exam stress? Tips to help calm the nerves' and also features a collection of classes students could attended.

Overall I think my contents and front page came out better than I thought it would as they stuck to the common exceptions which helped me to keep it to appeal to the target audience, I think that if my magazine was handed out around the school more people would pick it up and read it instead of just putting it straight into the bin as it appeals more to them and its easy to read and involves everyone. I still think improvements could have been made if I spent more time on it such as making it more gender neutral as the cover looks a bit girly but I will incorporate those ideas into my main task and hopefully improve from this in the future.

Typography - I tried to stick to all the same fonts and use different fonts and colours for different kinds of things. I used different colour to make it stand out of the page so it would be eye catching and interesting. As if all the text was the same and the colour was the same it would get a bit boring and look really dull. I used professional colours for the text such black and deep red on a white/light grey background.

Images - the images I have used are in high quality and look good with eachother on the contents page there is a main image a 3 little images which sticks to the common convention. I made sure that the three little images are all the same size and at the same angle as that instantly makes the magazine look more professional and tidy, its also the same with the main one is a high quality image which also makes the magazine look instantly more professional. On the front cover there is a main image which instantly draws the readers eyes to it and as it is the main image its a high quality, and it would make the reader want to continue as it looks professional

Conclusion - I think the contents page fits well as it serves its purpose of giving the reader all the main information that they would want to know before they continue reading the magazine without making it look to in your face, I think the overall contents page does look plain and simple and doesn't have the 'wow factor' however it serves its purpose and that's what its there for. The improvement that could be made is I could have put more information or facts on the contents page to make it more to look at for the reader.

Audience Research

To find out how to make a successfull magazine I used survey monkey and made a questionairre which included sensible questions that people could fill out and help me with ideas on what people want in there college magazine. I posted the link to the questionairre on facebook however only 3 people managed to do it, to improve this next time I will send an email to my friends to get them to fill it out.
I found out that more females read the magazine than males, however its only slightly more so I will still keep to the unisex gender theme

From my survey monkey questionairre I found out that my target audience is mainly based from 14-16
however this might be because the only people that bothered to do my questionairre was aged from 14-16 but if more people took the questionairre I could have gotten more answers.

This shows the magazine is gunna be based between band C1 - E

This tells me that everyone that will read this magazine is british, or there is a high chance they'll be british

This shows that people dont normally read the magazine so I would have to look at what they dont like and like about the magazine and co operate those things into my magazine to make it better.
2 people dont like it because it doesnt appeal to them, lack of writing, colours and the image quality, and 3 people dont like it because of the layout, this tells me that I will have to make my magazine pretty much the opposite to the current magazine

Everyone that took the survey wanted a catchy mast head, 2 people wanted interesting typography and 1 people wanted good quality images and for it to show whats inside the magazine, so I will put catchy headings to give previews of whats inside, I will also try and find a good font to use.

From seeing this I know that I will deffinitly call my magazine Jouvie and everyone who done the questionnaire prefers the magazine to be called jouvie than any of the other names.
